Lounging by the pool is a favorite American pastime. I cannot wait for the next family party poolside. Pools offer family and friends the opportunity to reconnect and have fun together. When you want to enjoy your summer activities, keep in mind that water and sun require a bit of planning, especially if children are involved.
Some key pool safety points to consider:
- Sun Block! Red is a good color for lobster but not for humans, use adequate sunscreen SPF and save skin from future damage.
- Fences help keep little ones safer: a good fence should include a guard and lock to prevent easy access and for when the pool is not in use.
- Never allow children to be unsupervised around or near a pool, even for a few seconds. Children are quick! And they are attracted by the fun, bright colored pool toys.
- Swimming lessons are a great investment. Allow your most experienced swimmers in the family be the pool aides, it helps to instill responsibility. Better yet, if hosting pool parties hire a certified YMCA or Red Cross lifeguard for the day.
- If you are a diver, know your depth, each year there are injuries sustained by diving into too shallow of a pool. Don’t become a statistic.
- Alcohol is often served at parties, but it doesn’t mix well with diving boards and heat. Don’t allow anyone who has been drinking alcohol to use the pool.
Fun activities!
Play the classic games: Marco Polo, Belly Flop or Cannon Ball contests, Swimming Competitions, Underwater Scavenger Hunts, Create a Whirlpool or just Jump in.
Better yet, make up your own games and add waterproof cameras to the shopping list for unique photographs to make memories that will last a lifetime.
